How to Track Google AI Overviews: A Practical Guide to Measuring AI Search Visibility

Google AI Overviews have changed what it means to measure search visibility.

By Vishal Dave Author of The Great Marketing Reset Published September 2026

Traditional SEO measurement asks:

How many clicks and impressions did my website receive from Google?

AI search adds another question:

How often is my website appearing inside Google's AI-generated search experience?

That distinction matters because a page can receive visibility inside an AI Overview without behaving like a traditional organic result.

Google now provides a dedicated Generative AI performance report in Search Console. The report measures your site's performance in Google's generative AI features, including AI Overviews and AI Mode.

This guide explains how to track Google AI Overviews, what the available metrics mean, and how to build a broader AI search visibility measurement system.

What Is Google AI Overview Tracking?

Google AI Overview tracking means measuring how often pages from your website appear as links within Google's AI-generated responses.

The most important distinction: AI Overview visibility ≠ traditional organic ranking.

An AI Overview can contain multiple links to supporting webpages. Google assigns those links the same search-result position occupied by the AI Overview rather than giving each cited page a separate traditional ranking position.

Therefore, simply looking at your normal ranking position isn't enough to understand AI Overview visibility. You need to look at generative AI performance data and the actual search results.

The Best Way to Track AI Overviews

There are three useful layers of measurement:

Layer 1: Google Search Console

Use Google's official data to measure aggregate generative AI impressions and clicks.

Layer 2: Manual Query Monitoring

Track specific queries manually to record AI Overview presence, citations, brand mentions, and competitors.

Layer 3: Behavioral Analytics

Use analytics to measure downstream visits, engaged sessions, leads, and conversions.

The strongest measurement system combines all three.

1. Use Google's Generative AI Performance Report

The most important tool is now Google Search Console's Generative AI performance report.

Google says the report provides data about how your website performs in generative AI features in Google Search. As of August 31, 2026, Google says these insights have rolled out to websites worldwide.

The report currently includes:

  • AI Overviews
  • AI Mode

This should become the starting point for any serious AI Overview measurement process.

2. What Does the Generative AI Report Measure?

The main metric is impressions.

Google defines these as impressions where links to your website were shown to a user within a generative AI feature in Google Search.

You can analyze the data by Pages, Countries, Devices, and Dates to examine trends and understand which content is gaining generative search visibility.

3. Track AI Overview Impressions

AI impressions are one of the most useful new metrics for AI search.

Sample Impression Progression:

January: 10,000 AI impressions

February: 14,000 AI impressions

March: 21,000 AI impressions

That indicates that links to your website are appearing increasingly often in Google's measured generative AI features. But don't automatically interpret increasing impressions as increasing traffic—AI visibility and website traffic are separate metrics.

4. Track AI Clicks

Clicks are still important. When a user clicks an external link in an AI Overview, Google counts that as a click. The same applies to links clicked from AI Mode.

You can calculate:

AI CTR = (AI clicks ÷ AI impressions) × 100

5. Track Your Top AI Pages

The Pages dimension is particularly useful. Sort pages by AI impressions to identify winners, growing pages, and pages with high impressions but low clicks.

Page Path AI Impressions AI Clicks
/guide/42,0001,200
/comparison/31,0002,100
/pricing/8,500620
/blog/topic-a/6,200180

6. Track AI Visibility by Country & Device

Analyze generative AI impressions by country and device (Mobile, Desktop, Tablet). Search results vary substantially by market and screen form factor.

7. Track Priority Queries & Citations

Maintain a query monitoring set. Periodically search your top queries manually to record AI Overview presence, brand presence, cited URLs, and competitors.

Citation vs Impression Distinction:

An AI impression tells you that a link to your site was shown in a generative AI feature. A citation tells you that a particular page was used as a referenced source in the generated answer.

8. Brand Mentions & Content Classification

A website doesn't need to receive a click to gain visibility. Track unlinked brand mentions, product recommendations, and which content types (Original research, product pages, comparisons, reviews, documentation) Google surfaces most frequently.

9. Compare AI Visibility With Traditional SEO

URL Organic Clicks Organic Imp. AI Imp. AI Clicks
Page A20,000500,00080,0002,400
Page B5,000120,00045,0001,900
Page C30,000700,0002,00050

You may find that traditional search traffic and AI visibility don't always move together. That makes this comparison valuable for content strategy.

10. Crawling vs AI Overview Visibility

Don't confuse crawler activity with AI visibility:

Crawler Request → Page Retrieved → Page Processed → Vector Indexing → Query Retrieval → Synthesis → Cited → Clicked

Server logs tell you about crawling; Search Console tells you about AI performance; manual monitoring shows SERP appearance.

AI Overview Tracking Checklist

Google Search Console

  • Open the Generative AI performance report
  • Track AI impressions & clicks
  • Track top pages, countries, and devices
  • Compare date ranges and export data regularly

Query & Technical Monitoring

  • Build a priority query list & check AI Overview presence
  • Record brand mentions, citations, cited URLs, and competitors
  • Monitor indexability, canonicals, robots.txt, and server logs

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Google Search Console track AI Overviews?

Yes. Google's Generative AI performance report provides data for generative AI features in Google Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Can I see which pages appear in AI Overviews?

Yes. The Pages dimension in the Generative AI performance report shows pages receiving impressions from generative AI features.

Does an AI Overview impression mean someone clicked my website?

No. An impression means a link to your site was shown in a generative AI feature. A click is counted separately when the user clicks the external link.

Can server logs tell me if Google used my page in an AI Overview?

No. Logs can show crawler requests and HTTP activity, but they don't prove that a page was ultimately retrieved for or cited in a particular AI Overview.

Final Takeaway

AI Overview tracking is no longer just about checking Google manually and asking: "Do I appear?"

Search Console → AI Impressions → Pages → Queries → Citations → Traffic → Conversions
